Rather than the full-length pose many people picture, this print shows Henry VIII from the waist up, standing and facing the viewer squarely. It reproduces a painting by Hans Holbein the Younger, who served as court painter to Henry in the 1530s and 1540s and helped shape the king's official image of power and dignity. Because Holbein's Tudor portraits were copied and reproduced so often, they became some of the most recognizable images of the period. This print likely dates from the decades when color halftone printing was used in books and magazines to make famous paintings widely available.
