Portrait prints of Henry III of France, the last Valois king, were in demand long after his death, and this lithograph is one of them. It was published by James Stewart at some point between 1800 and 1850, roughly 250 years after the king's reign, so it shows how a nineteenth-century publisher chose to picture a sixteenth-century monarch. Henry ruled from 1574 until 1589, a period marked by the French Wars of Religion and the rivalry of the Catholic League. He was assassinated that year by a Dominican friar, and his death passed the crown to the Huguenot Henry of Navarre.
