Napoleon appears here as First Consul in a portrait by Lemoine, dated by the French Republican calendar to year X, or 1802. The print is a photomechanical specimen made for an illustrated edition of Frédéric Masson's study of Napoleon and women, which places it in the period's wave of reproductive image-making. Napoleon held the First Consulship from 1799 until he proclaimed himself emperor in 1804, and this formal portrait shows him presenting himself as head of the French state. The restrained pose is worth noticing next to the private life Masson's book explored.
