Napoleon's crossing of the Great St. Bernard Pass in May 1800 was a campaign that Jacques-Louis David turned into a heroic image of command. In the painting, the general rears on a horse above the rocks, with the names of Hannibal and Charlemagne carved into the stone, linking him to earlier conquerors who crossed the same mountains. This color halftone, dated between 1890 and 1940, is a mechanical reproduction that carried the composition to a wide public, and its title appears in four languages.
