This print shows the Royal Mail setting out from the General Post Office in London, a departure scene rather than a view along the road. James Pollard, best known for his coaching and sporting subjects, painted the original, and R.G. Reeves engraved it in aquatint, with the color added by hand. Mail coaches had carried letters out of the capital since the 1780s, running on fixed timetables that gave them priority on the roads, so the picture records the routine that governed the whole network. The record dates it only loosely, but its 1830 subject places it in the final busy years of the horse-drawn coach, before railways took over long-distance travel.
