The Palace of Westminster, seen here as a color photochrom, is the seat of Britain's Parliament and one of the best-known Gothic Revival buildings in the world. Its present form dates from the rebuilding after a fire in 1834, designed largely by Charles Barry with Augustus Pugin's medieval detailing. Photochrom was a Swiss process from the late 1880s that gave photographs soft, painted-looking color, and it was popular for tourist views like this one. Notice how the process renders the pale stone and river light.
