Under the slogan "Lend your strong right arm to your country," this long, narrow color lithograph puts a muscular arm and clenched fist front and center, a direct appeal to the viewer's sense of strength and duty. It was printed in London for the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a body set up in 1915 to encourage men to volunteer for the army. Britain had relied on volunteers until conscription began in 1916, so posters like this one, issued in series and numbered (this is no. 26), were a major part of the effort to fill the ranks. Its blunt, almost physical imagery was typical of the period's wartime recruiting art.
