Fall in!" is a parade-ground order, and this lithograph addresses the viewer with it directly, asking men to answer their country's call by joining the ranks. The poster belongs to Britain's First World War recruiting drive, when the country depended on volunteers before conscription was introduced in 1916. Posters like this one were pasted on hoardings, in shop windows and in public buildings, where they used stark slogans and bold color to press men to enlist. Its strong colors and blunt wording show how the recruiting campaign tried to turn patriotic duty into an immediate personal decision.
