The text of this poster sets it apart from the more familiar Kitchener recruiting images: rather than issuing a command, it asks the viewer to examine his own motives and warns that a reason for staying home may be only a selfish excuse. Lord Kitchener, then Secretary of State for War, lent his name to the campaign, and the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, which issued this London lithograph in 1915, worked to fill the ranks while Britain still relied on volunteers. Conscription in early 1916 ended that reliance, so posters like this one mark the last stretch of voluntary enlistment. The record names V. Sout[a?]y as the artist and Roberts & Leete Ltd. as the printer.
