Unlike many illustrated recruiting and propaganda posters of the period, this lithograph has no picture at all, only a printed appeal headed "Bad form in dress." Issued in London in 1915 as poster no. 4 by the National Organising Committee for War Savings, it asks women to cut back on extravagant clothing. The argument has two parts: money saved would help the war effort, and workers in the clothing trades could be released for other essential labor. It shows how the British home front was urged to economize during the First World War, with private spending treated as a national concern.
