Unlike most posters of the period, this one carries no image at all. Its message rests entirely on the words of its title: to dress extravagantly in wartime is "worse than bad form," it is unpatriotic. Issued under the National War Savings Committee, it belongs to Britain's campaign to persuade civilians to lend money to the government and to cut back on spending that did not serve the war effort. Posters like this one used moral pressure, linking personal fashion choices to national duty, and the series it belongs to, numbered as poster no. 7, shows how the campaign tried to reach ordinary households.
