Unlike the many engravings of de Soto's march on this board, this one shows the night the Chickasaw set fire to the Spanish camp in what is now northeastern Mississippi, in the winter of 1540 to 1541. The attack destroyed supplies and equipment that the expedition could not easily replace, and Spanish chroniclers recorded it as one of the expedition's hardest setbacks. The scene appeared as an engraving on page 449 of Lambert A. Wilmer's 1858 biography of de Soto, which was written for a mid-nineteenth-century American readership fascinated by early Spanish exploration.
