The Natchez Trace Parkway runs for roughly 444 miles through Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, and its curves follow the routes of old footpaths that Native American peoples and later settlers wore into the land. This stretch of rolling pasture and wooded hills shows the parkway's signature design: a slow, narrow road kept free of commercial traffic and billboards. Built by the National Park Service and completed in stages over several decades, the parkway was meant to preserve the scenery and history of the historic trail rather than to speed travelers between cities.
