A bend in the two-lane road runs between open green fields and trees stripped bare, a stretch that shows how the Natchez Trace Parkway follows the land rather than cutting straight through it. The parkway traces part of an old trail that Native American peoples and later settlers used to travel between the Mississippi River country and Nashville, Tennessee. Now managed by the National Park Service as a scenic route, it bars commercial trucks and was laid out to fit the countryside, which is why its curves and open views still feel unhurried.
