The white porch and brick front set this house apart from the wooded stretches and open fields usually shown along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Built as a two-story brick residence, it stands as a reminder that people lived and farmed along the old road long before the parkway was laid out. The Trace began as a series of Native American paths and later became a busy post road linking Nashville with Natchez on the Mississippi River in the early 1800s, when travelers on foot, horseback and flatboat men returning home used it heavily. The parkway, administered by the National Park Service, follows much of that route and preserves such structures as part of its story.
