A log house and its farm buildings sit alone in an open field, a reminder that the land along the Natchez Trace was settled and farmed long after the old path was first used. The Trace began as a route used by Native peoples and later became a major overland road for travelers and traders moving between the Mississippi River country and Nashville. When steamboats made river travel faster in the early 1800s, the road declined, and the farms that remained along its corridor were often built of logs. The Natchez Trace Parkway, managed by the National Park Service, now preserves the route and much of its history.
