Aplano, Alabama, is shown here in a bird's-eye view, a style that suited small towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Across the state in those decades, cotton grown on upland and river-bottom farms and shipped through rail and river towns formed the main economy, while lumber, coal, and iron gained ground in the north and central counties. Railroads tied many county seats and depots to larger markets, and gins, mills, and general stores gave small towns their reason for existing. Residents most often knew their town by its courthouse square, depot, and churches, and its fortunes rose and fell with cotton prices and the arrival or absence of a rail line. Little is documented here about Aplano's own population or civic life, so the wider state picture is the surest guide to what its people experienced.
