In April 1865, Mobile, Alabama, was a Gulf port that had long shipped cotton out of the Mobile River delta and drawn much of its wealth from that trade. The Confederate defenses shown here were built to guard the city's approaches during the war, which had cut off most of its seaborne commerce through the Union blockade of Mobile Bay. Union forces under Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby closed in on the city in early April, and Confederate troops pulled out on April 11, leaving the city to be occupied the next day. The occupation brought an end to nearly four years of wartime hardship for residents who had watched their port, rail links, and mills decline under blockade, and it marked a sharp turn toward Reconstruction.
