Alabama in 1865 was a state emerging from the Civil War, and the railroads that crossed it were often the first things to be rebuilt. The New Orleans, Mobile and Chattanooga Railroad was meant to tie the Gulf Coast ports of Mobile and New Orleans to the interior and to the rail network reaching toward Tennessee, carrying cotton, timber, and other goods that had once moved mainly by river and steamboat. Mobile, the state's chief seaport, had been cut off by the Union blockade for much of the war and was captured in the spring of 1865, so its commerce depended heavily on whether tracks and bridges could be repaired. Across the South, the immediate postwar years brought damaged lines, uncertain finances, and labor shortages, and the reconnection of these routes was closely watched by merchants and planters alike.
