Mobile Bay in the late nineteenth century was a Gulf port whose prosperity rested on cotton, timber, and the ships that carried them out past the bay's shallow mouth. Cotton and lumber from the interior arrived by river and rail, and the city's wharves and sawmills depended on a steady flow of vessels. The city also carried the memory of the Civil War, when the 1864 naval battle at the bay's entrance, won by Union Admiral David Farragut, closed a major Confederate harbor. Residents knew the town as well for Carnival, a tradition dating to French colonial days, whose parades and balls drew visitors from across the region. Yellow fever outbreaks, which struck Mobile repeatedly in that century, shaped public health and civic life as much as trade did.
