Alabama in the late 1800s was a state whose wealth still rested largely on cotton, with river towns like Mobile and Montgomery shipping bales through their ports and rail depots. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, the state's economy turned increasingly toward mining and manufacturing, especially in the north, where coal and iron ore drew investors to the new city of Birmingham. Railroads linked these expanding towns to the Gulf and to markets farther north, and their growth brought new courthouses, churches, schools, and commercial blocks. Most residents of such places would have known their town first as a cotton market, a rail junction, or a county seat, depending on where they lived.
