Signed by Martin Van Buren, this proclamation announces the opening of Chickasaw land for sale to the public, a step that followed the federal government's acquisition of Chickasaw territory in northern Mississippi and western Tennessee. The Natchez Trace ran through that country, so the sales changed the settlements, farms and roads along the old route. Land offices and surveyors soon followed, and the Chickasaw were removed west within a few years. The document shows how treaty cessions were turned into federal land policy and private property.
