Rogers' Groups were small plaster sculptures of figures arranged in scenes from daily and wartime life, and this stereoview records one such tableau of men as a pair of side-by-side photographs. John Rogers began making the groups around 1859, and they sold in large numbers, so their images reached many homes through cheap prints and card views like this one. Filed under Grant, it reflects the Civil War era and its aftermath, when Rogers' sentimental and patriotic scenes were especially popular. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two images merged into a single three-dimensional picture, which made these cards a common parlor entertainment of the period.
