A group of candy makers meets with President Herbert Hoover on May 16, 1929, about two months into his first year in office. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials, visiting delegations and public events in the 1920s and 1930s, made the glass negative. Hoover, a former mining engineer who had served as Secretary of Commerce, took office in March 1929 and met often with business and trade groups. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which gives the image its aged look.
