Dated May 8, 1929, about two months into Herbert Hoover's presidency, this glass negative shows the president with a group from a parent-teachers organization. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events of the period, made the exposure on a large glass plate, a format that captured fine detail but is fragile over time. The streaks and blemishes visible in the image come from natural deterioration of the original coating. The Library of Congress received the negative as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
