Dated May 16, 1929, this glass negative shows Herbert Hoover with a group of candy makers, not long after he took office as president in March of that year. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and visitors in the capital, made pictures like this as a working record of public life. Glass plates were the standard format of the period, and the streaks visible here come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
