Hoover appears here in a group portrait with Red Cross workers, recorded by the National Photo Company in 1929, the year he took office as president. Hoover had built his public reputation on wartime and postwar relief, so his ties to Red Cross work give this picture its context. The catalog title dates the sitting to April 24, 1929, but the date field reads May 24, so the exact day remains unsettled. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in its original coating. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
