Harrisburg's riverfront anchors this 1855 bird's-eye view, which shows the town spread along the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. By then Harrisburg had served as Pennsylvania's state capital since 1812, and the capitol and government offices gave the town much of its civic importance. Views like this were drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, the river, and rail lines could all be seen at once, and the Philadelphia firm E. Sachse & Co. was one of the publishers producing such city prospects in the mid-nineteenth century. The sheet is worth studying for how the town was growing along the river during the decades when railroads were reshaping American cities.
