Honesdale grew up around the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, whose coal and gravity railroad ended in this Wayne County town, and this 1890 bird's-eye view shows it as a busy hub of that enterprise. In 1829 the Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive built in America, was tested on the company's rails here. The map was drawn in perspective from a high, imagined vantage point by James B. Moyer, A. E. Downs and T. M. Fowler, artists who produced many such town views in the late 1800s, when these panoramas were a popular way to record streets, churches and businesses.
