Dated 1888, this view of Gettysburg was made a quarter century after the battle of July 1863, when the town and surrounding fields were still marked by the fighting. That anniversary drew aging Union and Confederate veterans back to the battlefield for a reunion in the summer of 1888, and the photographs from that period often record the monuments, tents, and visitors that appeared as the battlefield became a place of remembrance. Because the record gives little more detail, the picture is best read as a glimpse of Gettysburg in the years when its identity was shifting from wartime landscape to national memorial.
