Sioux City sits in western Iowa where the Big Sioux River meets the Missouri, and this 1888 bird's-eye view shows the town from an angled height, with streets, rail lines and riverfront all in sight. Henry Wellge, a leading maker of these panoramic city views, drew it, and the Milwaukee firm Beck & Pauli printed it. Such maps were popular with civic boosters hoping to attract investors and new residents, and this one captures a river town growing fast on rail, river trade and livestock.
