Kansas City's riverfront and rising bluffs above the Missouri River anchor this 1869 bird's-eye panorama, which shows the town from an elevated angle as if seen from above. Ruger & Stoner, the firm known for many city views of the period, drew the map, and the Merchant's Lithographing Company printed it. The date is significant because the Hannibal Bridge, which carried trains across the Missouri to Kansas City, Kansas, was completed that year, tying the growing city more closely to the railroads that were reshaping its economy. Boosters and residents bought maps like this one as a record of a town on the rise.
