Urbana, the county seat of Champaign County in east-central Illinois, is the subject of this bird's-eye view from 1869, drawn just as the Illinois Industrial University was getting started on the town's edge. The university, founded under the federal Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, opened in 1868 and became a major force in Urbana's growth. Albert Ruger, who drew the view for the Chicago Lithographing Company, produced many such panoramic maps of Midwestern towns in the late 1860s and 1870s, typically drawn from an imagined high vantage point so streets, houses and businesses could be read at a glance. Look for the railroad lines, which shaped where the town expanded.
