A county-level map of Lawrence, Kansas, dated 1869, sets this sheet apart from the wider Midwest pan maps it is filed among. Lawrence was founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Company, and its settlers were central to the fight over whether Kansas would enter the Union as a free or slave state. By 1869 the town had grown into a rail and commercial hub on the Kansas River, and a map from that moment captures street patterns, lots and landmarks as the community was taking shape after the Civil War. Maps like this one are useful for tracing how early town plats gave way to the settled city.
