This bird's-eye view shows Lawrence, a town on the Kansas River that was founded in 1854 by settlers from the New England Emigrant Aid Company who wanted Kansas to enter the Union as a free state. By 1869 the town had lived through the sacking by pro-slavery raiders in 1856 and the burning of much of its business district during Quantrill's raid in 1863. A. Ruger, who drew many American city views in this period, presents the town from an elevated angle so that streets, principal buildings, and the surrounding countryside can be read at a glance. The view is useful for seeing how a young Midwestern community laid out its growing campus and commercial blocks after the Civil War.
