Unlike most views of a battlefield, this 1890 lithograph shows the Valley Forge grounds from a high, angled vantage point, as if the viewer were looking down from above the hills. The Continental Army spent the winter of 1777 to 1778 encamped here under George Washington, enduring cold, hunger, and disease before emerging as a more disciplined force. By 1890, the site had become a place of national memory, and bird's-eye views like this one were a popular way to record such places in fine detail. The drawing was credited to James B. Moyer and A. E. Downs.
