Saratoga Springs, a resort town in upstate New York, is the subject of this bird's-eye panorama from 1888, drawn in the angled perspective that made these town views easy to read at a glance. By the late 1800s the town was known for its mineral springs, which drew visitors seeking cures, and for its grand hotels and summer social season. The Saratoga racetrack, which had opened in 1863, added to the town's reputation for fashionable leisure. Burleigh's firm was one of the best-known makers of these detailed city views, so the map offers a useful record of the streets, hotels and park grounds as they looked at the height of the resort era.
