Troy, New York, is the particular subject here: a city on the Hudson River, just north of Albany, drawn from an elevated angle so that its streets, rooftops and riverfront appear almost as they would to a bird in flight. Bird's-eye panoramic views like this one were a popular way for nineteenth-century cities to show off their growth, and Troy, long a center of iron works, collar and shirt manufacturing, and bell foundries, was an industrial city at its height. The lithographic firm Beck & Pauli, based in Milwaukee, produced many such city views in the 1870s and 1880s, working from careful surveys to record individual buildings, factories and church spires.
