Ithaca sits at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, with steep glens cutting into the hills on either side, and this 1882 bird's-eye view shows that setting from an imagined height above the streets. Views like this were drawn to record churches, mills, and houses in fine detail, and they were often sold to residents and local businesses as a source of civic pride. By 1882 Cornell University, founded in 1865 on the hill above town, had become a major presence, and its growing campus was reshaping the community the view depicts. Worth noticing are the lake, the creek gorges, and the rows of houses climbing the slopes.
