Hamilton, a village in Madison County in central New York, is the subject here, drawn from an imagined height that lets the viewer take in its streets and buildings at a glance. The village grew up around the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution, founded in 1819 and later renamed Colgate University, so the campus and surrounding houses are worth a close look. Bird's-eye views like this were commercial productions, often made by traveling artists and sold to residents, and they doubled as civic promotion that flattered a town's growth. This reduced version keeps the layout and detail of the original.
