Broadalbin, a village in Fulton County in the foothills of New York's Adirondacks, is the subject of this 1880 bird's-eye view, drawn from an imagined vantage point high above the streets. L. R. Burleigh, whose Burleigh Litho firm specialized in these town views, was among the most prolific makers of such lithographs in the late nineteenth century. Maps of this kind were usually sold to residents and local businesses, so they often show individual houses, churches, mills and storefronts in fine detail. Their combination of artistic perspective and surveyed accuracy makes them valuable records of how small American communities looked and were laid out in the period.
