Erie's waterfront on Presque Isle Bay is the focus of this 1909 bird's-eye view, drawn from a high oblique angle so the whole city spreads out from the lake shore to the outlying farms. Charles Lederle, a panoramic map artist, produced these views for many American towns in the early 1900s, working from elevated vantage points and sketching streets, rail lines, and major buildings with a surveyor's care for detail. Views like this one served as civic portraits, showing the growth of a manufacturing and shipping city at a time when Great Lakes trade and rail connections were driving its expansion. Look closely at the harbor and rail yards to see how the city's economy shaped its layout.
