Norristown, Pennsylvania, sits on the Schuylkill River, and this 1881 bird's-eye view shows the borough as it looked at the height of its industrial growth, with small vignettes of its mills drawn around the edges of the town. The panorama was produced by the firm of Packard and Butler, whose lithographed city views were popular in the late nineteenth century for documenting local street patterns, churches, factories and homes from an imagined vantage point above the rooftops. Maps like this one were often sold to residents and local boosters, and today they are valued for the fine detail they preserve of buildings and industries that have since changed.
