Few posters from the Spanish Civil War pair a public works exhibition with a mask, which makes this 1937 color lithograph stand out. It was issued by the Sindicato de Profesionales de Bellas Artes of the UGT, the socialist-affiliated general workers' union, whose artists produced propaganda for the Republic during the war. Republican poster makers often worked in collective workshops and printed bold, flat designs in large runs so they could be read quickly on city walls. The mask, a motif that recurs in the period's imagery of concealment and false promises, is worth noticing as the poster's central visual idea.
