The title points straight at its subject: an aquarium, a glass-walled world of water, fish, and shells rather than a single creature or view. Public aquariums were a fairly new idea when many pictures like this were made. The London Zoo's Fish House, which opened in 1853, drew large crowds, and similar tanks soon appeared in Paris, Berlin, and other cities. Images of these tanks often caught the strange appeal of the period, when visitors could look at sea life up close for the first time. The picture's details, from the shells to the swimming fish, show how the aquarium was being presented to a curious public.
