The poster's headline promises a Ringling Bros. aviary and aquarium, which it bills as "the largest zoological exhibit on earth." Circus advertising of the 1890s often leaned on this kind of boast, since traveling shows competed for attention in each town they visited. The Courier Lithograph Company, a commercial printer in Buffalo, New York, produced many such posters in bold chromolithographic color, using stone or metal plates for each hue to make the images eye-catching from across a street. Posters like this one were pasted on walls and fences ahead of the show, so they served as both entertainment and a promise about the animals waiting under the big top.
