This advertising panel for a zoological garden sets a woman among the animals, a staging meant to suggest calm, friendly encounters and to draw visitors through the gate. Panels like this were common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when zoos were marketing themselves as respectable family outings and places of scientific display. Commercial printers often produced such work in bright colors and idealized scenes, so the image reveals as much about how the public was invited to see wild animals as it does about the animals themselves.
