A color lithograph from about 1881, this design pairs girls with birds in the sentimental style that was popular on advertising cards of the period. Printers produced such images in quantity, and merchants used them as trade cards, handing them to customers or tucking them into packages, so a pleasing scene could double as a reminder of a product or shop. The record notes a copyright held by Charles Kiefer, a name worth keeping in mind when tracing the origins of this kind of commercial chromolithograph. Its subject matter, showing young girls among birds, reflects the era's taste for gentle, decorative imagery that made advertising feel pleasant to receive.
