A matched pair of wild ducks, the male and female shown side by side, makes this plate distinct from other bird studies on the board. The title credits the naturalist Buffon, whose eighteenth-century *Histoire naturelle* described these birds, and the plate was drawn by Édouard Traviès. It was issued by the Paris publisher Ledot aîné around 1857 as number 42 in the album *Les Oiseaux les plus remarquables*. Color lithography like this let mid-century French publishers sell affordable, scientifically framed bird illustrations to a broad public. Look closely at the plumage differences between the two birds, which the artist used to show how the sexes differed.
