The title places this lithograph on Carroll Island, a marshy stretch of the Chesapeake Bay region in Maryland, and it is one of the few prints in the gallery that shows a specific wetland habitat rather than a generic scene of birds. Published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1872, it belongs to the firm's popular run of colored prints that brought natural scenes and American landscapes to middle-class parlors. Wild swans wintered in large numbers on the bay's shallow waters, and in the late 1800s the birds were also hunted commercially, which gives the scene a quieter context than its decorative style suggests.
